The explanation for those ghastly pictures of Tony Blair which appeared in the Financial Times last week: the ones that show a lonely, haunted, emaciated character escaped from The Blair Witch Project. They were taken by a fashion photographer who calls himself Rankin, though that's actually his middle name, and his parents christened him John Waddell.

I only had a few minutes with Blair, and I tricked him. I underlit his face, then switched off the main lights, and voila - the scary expressionist portrait was born. For the one where Tony's on a chair, looking dishevelled and alone, I got him to loosen his suit, knowing he'd go for the relaxed/cool premise of the instruction, then changed the lens to wide-angle, which got Tony looked very isolated and slightly deranged.
